HISTORY OF THE CIRCLE A compendium of lore collected by Silversworn about the ancient iterations of their order. Copies of these notes can be obtained from the Silver Circle archives.
Cult of Elune 15,000 BDP The kaldorei were born and blessed by Elune, and the first Oracles founded the Cult of Elune. | | | Flame of Elune 15,000 BDP A divine fire appeared on the edge of the Well of Eternity, and through this fire the First Oracles saw a vision of Elune's will for peace. An Oracle by the name of Imyira Whisperblade vowed to uphold this will for future generations, believing it was the destiny of the kaldorei to see Elune's will fulfilled. | | | Founding of the Sisterhood 15,000-14,000 BDP As the empire prospered and grew, so too did the Cult of Elune, eventually becoming the Sisterhood of Elune. | | | First Keeper and the Silver Guard 12,000-11,000 BDP As Queen Azshara rose to power, the arcane began driving out the Elunarian faith. Oracle Imyira Whisperblade formed the Silver Guard, a collective of brothers and sisters loyal to the Elunarian faith charged with protecting the Flame of Elune from the highborne and combating Queen Azshara's agenda to become more glorified than Elune herself. | | | Death of the First Keeper and the Formation of the Circle of the Crescentmoon 11,000 BDP Perceiving the First Keeper as a threat to their Queen's supremacy, the highborne set a trap to arrest Imyira Whisperblade. The highborne ransacked the Temple of Elune on the outskirts of Zin-Azshari, which was tended by the First Keeper, and they nearly extinguished the Flame of Elune. The First Keeper was taken and publicly executed in the city of Galhara. The surviving Silver Guard found a single blue ember that remained from the Flame of Elune and carefully preserved it. The daughter of the First Keeper, a young huntress called Celissera Glaivewhisper, reformed the Silver Guard, naming it the Circle of the Crescentmoon. The Circle of the Crescentmoon secreted what remained of the Flame of Elune into hiding. | | | The Formation of the Shadow Guard 11,000 BDP Not long following the untimely death of the First Keeper, it was discovered that one of the Silver Guard had betrayed the order and revealed the First Keeper's place of hiding to the highborne. Silversworn Ylaesia Glaivewhisper, second daughter of the First Keeper and sister of Celissera, was responsible for uncovering the truth of what had happened. Ylaesia eventually found the perpetrator and later took justice into her own hands when the oathbreaker attempted to flee. This act was branded as murder by fellow Silversworn, for Ylaesia had carried out the act of executing the oathbreaker before a council could be mustered. At a subsequent hearing, Ylaesia was excommunicated from the Silver Guard and cast into exile. Yet, at some point before her exile Ylaesia had split part of the Flame of Elune and kept that piece of it with her, always. Some Silversworn left the Silver Guard in the wake of this decision, believing Ylaesia's banishment wrongful. In time, Ylaesia and the other Silversworn founded a new order called the Shadow Guard. | | | Splitting of the Silver Flame 11,000-10,000 BDP After the heinous execution of her mother, the excommunication of her younger sister and the dissolution of the Silver Guard, Second Keeper Celissera Glaivewhisper and her followers nurtured the Flame of Elune and went to great lengths to protect and preserve it against the highborne again. The Second Keeper decided to sever the Flame of Elune into pieces and hide them throughout the Empire at sacred shrines which were tended by close confidants and followers of the Elunarian faith. During this time, the Second Keeper also wrote an extensive guide to unlock the mysteries of the Flame of Elune which also detailed the values of her order and the order that came before. These writings were documented on runestone tablets that were hidden with the severed pieces of the Flame of Elune, known as the Silver Flames. | | | War of the Ancients 10,000 BDP By the War of the Ancients, the Circle of the Crescentmoon had become a collection of explorers, refugees and displaced warriors and mages from the Kaldorei Resistance and the Moon Guard. By the end of the War of the Ancients few remained. In the first six centuries (600 years) after the War of the Ancients, the esteemed Circle of the Crescentmoon dissolved. A select few survivors of the order gathered in Hyjal, among the shrines of the Wild Gods, and decided to create a new order that would forever watch over the kaldorei. They decided to name themselves the Silver Sentinels, in homage to the first iteration of their order.
Ylaesia and her Shadow Guard also fought against the Legion, serving alongside the Kaldorei Resistance. In the midst of a great battle, Ylaesia was felled by a nathrezim. The nathrezim then used twisted magic to raise the body of Ylaesia, but the Flame of Elune had protected Ylaesia's spirit. Locked in a state of undeath, Ylaesia called upon the Night Warrior aspect of Elune to empower herself, the Flame, and aid her in protecting her people. The outcome was caustic, and while the Night Warrior answered the call, it resulted in the Flame consuming both Ylaesia and the nathrezim. In the wake of Ylaesia's demise, her piece of the Flame of Elune turned from silver to black, tinged by the might of the Night Warrior. In this final act of vengeance, Ylaesia's broken spirit was suffused with that of the nathrezim's as well, and was eternally bound to the new Black Flame of Elune. | | | Vigil of the Silver Sentinels 10,000 BDP - 21 ADP By the time of their formation, the Silver Sentinels had lost the ancient history of their order to the Sundering. The many texts, tomes and even the Night's Code and the knowledge of the hidden Flames of Elune were gone. The Silver Sentinels is the longest-lived iteration of the ancient order, and they endured from the end of the War of the Ancients until the Battle for Mount Hyjal during the Third War. They lost many throughout the various wars of history, but none more so than the Battle for Mount Hyjal. From that war, only two members survived: Taiev Shadowglade and Niviel Silvertree. | | | Service of the Shadow Guard 10,000 BDP - 30 ADP Following Ylaesia's death, her daughter Thenysea Glaivewhisper assumed the role of Keeper. After discovering the changes in their Flame, Shadow Guard collectively decided to operate as a secret order. They served the kaldorei people throughout many historical wars, but never stepped into the light to receive credit for their deeds. Believing attunement to the Black Flame could pose a danger to those incapable of handling the raw strength of the Night Warrior aspect of Elune, the Shadow Guard chose to remain elusive. | | | Circle of the Silvereye 22 - 25 ADP Together Niviel Silvertree and Taiev Shadowglade reformed the fallen Silver Sentinels, calling themselves the Circle of the Silvereye. For three years, Shadowglade led the Silvereye on several quests to protect and aid the kaldorei and the Alliance. Near the end of their adventures, the Silvereye discovered a sacred Flame hidden in the vaults of Eldre'thalas where they uncovered old history about their order. | | | The Fallen Keeper and the Fracturing of the Silvereye 25 ADP Shadowglade and the Silvereye delivered what they found to the Sisterhood of Elune in Darnassus, where Shadowglade's methods were called into question. The senior priestesses held a conclave and decided to confiscate the sacred Flame and proclaimed that the Silvereye had lost its way and those who followed its banner were disbanded. | | | Changes in the Shadow Guard 30 - 31 ADP During the Legion invasion of the Broken Isles, Keeper Thenysea Glaivewhisper of the Shadow Guard fell in battle like her mother before her. The mantle of leadership was then assumed by Tana Rosedancer, per Thenysea's final wishes. Thenysea believed Rosedancer, her adoptive daughter, had the true makings of a Keeper and she trusted that her daughter Halia Glaivewhisper would continue to serve Rosedancer as Matron of the Black Flame long after Thenysea was gone. | | | A Circle Reborn 32 ADP Nearly a decade after the disbanding of the Silvereye, Priestess Feyawen Nightfury rose to some influence within the Sisterhood. Inspired by the sacred Flame and the lore found by the Silvereye some years prior, Nightfury used her influence to rebuild a circle of keen-eyed kaldorei who would stand vigil over Kalimdor and the Alliance. They named themselves the Silver Circle, and they have only just begun to unravel the mysteries of the ancient history of their organization.
